How I Was Called To China

Our Founder

It was 1991, and my holidays were due as I was working as a nanny in New Plymouth. I wanted to make this holiday count for the Lord, so I decided to go to Hong Kong for two weeks. I stayed with an organization in HK and took Bibles into China.

This was my first trip overseas, and it was amazing for me. When I walked through border and customs into the courtyard at Shen Zhen railway station, I put my bag down and looked up to heaven and said to the Lord, “I am home. I am so thankful this is my home, where I should be.” Later, as I arrived back in New Zealand and continued on with my work as a nanny in New Plymouth, this was stirring within me. I did really know that China was where I should be. I had not told anybody about what had happened to me in China. I decided to ponder it like Mary did in her heart and keep it there. I prayed about this and offered it to the Lord.

Three months later, I borrowed a car to go and see some people one hour away. I decided to ask them what they thought about me going to China. I respected their advice, because they had taught me the Bible, the Word of God. So I set off to see them. I had a cup of coffee with them and a chat, but I was too scared to bring up the subject. It was not until I was leaving and walking towards the door that I said to them, “What do you think about me going to China?” They laughed and laughed and laughed and said, “You have never been to Bible College; you’re divorced; you’ve been to lots of churches and no one knows you – who can support you? What church would support you?”

At that I said, “Well, I must get going. Just thought I’d ask. Bye,” and I left. I got in the car and drove around the corner where I sat with my head on the steering wheel and I cried and cried and cried to the Lord and said to Him, “I have never been so hurt. I am so sad.” After trying to compose myself.

I said to the Lord, “Lord I need three people to tell me that I’m going to go to China. I need to hear it clearly. I don’t want to hear about China being in the news. I need to hear directly from You that I will be going to China. I need to hear your voice. Whatever You say, I will do. I need to know it is You and I will be obedient and do what You ask.”

So I got in the car and went half an hour down the road to a friend’s place. She was so happy to see me and said, “Come in and have a coffee. I’ve something to tell you. Do you know that you are going to China?” She and her husband nodded and smiled and said, “Keep praying.” In my mind I said the Lord, “Lord that is just one.”

I continued on my journey back home. I went to see another friend half an hour away. I popped in and had a coffee with her. Her husband was mowing the lawn and he came in had a drink with us. They both said that they had been praying and asked me did I know that I was going to China? I smiled and said, “Please pray.” I said to the Lord, “That is just two.”

So I continued on to New Plymouth to deliver the car back to the friend. I put the keys in through the window because I thought they were out. But they were home and they heard the keys fall on the bench. They came out and said, “You can’t get away that easily, We’re going to go for a walk along the beach.” After the walk we stopped, and they passed me an envelope with NZ$1000 in it. They said, “Sandra we have been praying about you, and the Lord has told us that you are going to go to China.” At that I broke down and cried, and we were hugging one another and crying as I told them what had happened and that they were the third people that had told me within an hour that I was going to China.

In September, 1991, I really felt called by God to leave my three adult children and my home in New Zealand and move to China to work with children in some capacity. With a great sense of excitement, I sold all of my possessions and departed.

How Can You Help

A child’s home should be a place where special times are shared and lifelong treasured values and memories are established. The children who come into our care, however, have not experienced the benefits of a stable home and life. With your help, Sandra King’s Homes can change that.

Our Homes throughout China provide care and provide an environment that the children can call their own for as long as they need it or until placement can be found.

If you can and God puts this mission into your heart you can help to support our efforts.

A little bit truly does go a long way in China!
